Answer : Your Breath
Average Person: For the average healthy person, the maximum time they can comfortably and safely hold their breath is between 30 seconds and 90 seconds. This can vary depending on factors like lung capacity, fitness level, and relaxation techniques.
Trained Divers: Highly trained divers, especially those who practice freediving, can hold their breath for much longer periods. The current world record for freediving breath-holding without oxygen assistance is held by Budimir Ĺ obat, a Croatian freediver, made headlines on 27th March 2021 when he shattered the world record for the longest voluntary breath-hold by a male, clocking an astounding 24 minutes and 37.36 seconds underwater.. Budimir, aged 56 at the time, undertook this challenge not only to secure a world record but also to raise awareness and support for his earthquake-affected hometown of Petrinja. Despite facing training setbacks due to earthquake damage, Budimir’s dedication and rigorous training regimen over three years led him to achieve this incredible milestone. His motivation was deeply personal, rooted in his daughter’s autism advocacy. Budimir’s success highlights the mental fortitude required in freediving, with a mantra of perseverance and proper training echoing his belief that age is no barrier to achieving greatness. Note : It’s important to note that attempting to hold your breath for extended periods, especially for untrained individuals, can be dangerous. Hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breathing) before a breath-hold can lead to fainting or even drowning.
Always prioritise safety and avoid any practices that could put you at risk.

The key to extended breath-holding: like trained surfers like me is relaxation. Beforehand, practice deep breathing and calming techniques. Then, take slow, deep breaths to fill your lungs with oxygen. Relax your entire body, especially your face and neck. When holding your breath, exhale fully but slowly, then hold comfortably without straining. Listen to your body and resurface calmly when you feel the urge to breathe. Remember, safety first – always practice with a buddy!
